Meet one of many amazing survivors... Pastor Billy Russell
Reverend Billy Russell, the 2009 Lifestyle Change Award Winner, was nominated by a congregant at his church, the Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Minneapolis. While Billy was an athlete in his youth, somewhere along the way he became inactive. At his annual physical, he was informed that if he did not lose weight, begin to exercise and eat healthier, he would not be alive for more than two years. With the support of his wife, Billy lost 90 pounds through diet and exercise and his cholesterol and blood pressure are back to normal. Through his own experience, Billy also learned more about heart health disparities within the African American community and he set out to convert his congregation to live healthier lives. He partnered with the AHA to promote awareness about cardiovascular diseases, established a parish nurse ministry and was awarded a grant that enabled a “Heart Healthy” exercise room to be outfitted in the church. Billy’s goal now was to fit into his youngest son’s jeans. His goal became a reality at the end of 2009!
